Learn The Different Types of BBL Shapes
The Brazilian Butt Lift, or the BBL, is one of the most popular forms of plastic surgery out there. Patients love how the BBL works as a “two-for-one” procedure, as it both adds volume to the buttocks while also sculpting and trimming another part of the body. This method allows for a massive transformation in one fell swoop.
However, potential BBL patients should know that not all Brazilian Butt Lift results are the same. In fact, there are a variety of BBL shapes and results. These varying results will depend on the personal goals of the client. The technique that a surgeon utilizes for a BBL procedure will be determined by the type of shape the client naturally has, as well as their desired outcome.
If you are considering trying a Brazilian Butt Lift, it’s a good idea to first identify what you ultimately want your butt to look like. This is where shape comes in. First, figure out what the natural shape of your rear is, and from there you can start pinning down which of the BBL shapes will work best with your proportions. Our guide to different types of BBL shapes and results is a great starting point for your research.
All the Different Types of BBL and How to Ask for the BBL You Want
If you’re considering enhancing your buttocks, you should understand that different butt shapes exist with multiple types of the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) to achieve your desired results. For natural BBL results, you’ll want to choose the right type of surgery based on your unique shape. Talk to an experienced plastic surgeon for everything you want to know about BBLs.
Why are BBLs so Popular?
BBLs have gained in popularity in the past few years second to breast augmentation because they help you achieve two goals at once. Liposuction is used to transfer fat cells from one area, which are injected into the buttocks for a more aesthetically pleasing appearance for your physique.
One of the trends on the rise in cosmetic surgery is combining body sculpting procedures, which BBLs do quite well. Because the BBL uses your own fat cells for the injections, it also lowers the risk of rejection or complications. Most BBLs are quite safe when performed by board-certified plastic surgeons.
How Different Butt Shapes are Achieved
When you go for a consultation with the plastic surgeon, they will discuss your goals for the surgery and help you come up with a plan to optimize your appearance and make the most of the procedure. Just like every body is different, every BBL is different because there are different butt shapes that will look differently. The Brazilian Butt Lift isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. Rather, it is a personalized procedure based on your unique body and personal goals.
Laterals vs Hips
To increase the fullness of the lateral area of the buttocks, a lateral BBL is required. The result of this procedure is an hourglass figure. Lateral surgery is often performed when you have a shelf-like buttock with a slope that fluctuates downward. If you have a heart-shaped rear, you are likely to need hips BBL to achieve a gradual slope.

Classic Pre-BBL Types and Shapes
Bums are a bit like snowflakes: each one is unique and different! That being said, most natural, pre-BBL bottoms tend to fall under one of four categories. It’s important to know which type of bottom you have to achieve natural BBL results. This will also help determine where you need fullness added or the shape altered with the surgery. Here is more information about each of the four types and what to expect from surgery.
Inverted or V-Shaped Butt
The V-shaped butt doesn’t have a lot of volume in the lower buttocks and is generally accompanied by a fuller abdominal area. Bums with this shape tend to be on the “flatter” side and resemble an inverted triangle. Patients with an inverted or V-shaped butt sometimes opt for a BBL in order to better fill their jeans and bring more volume to their behind. Generally, these procedures use some of the extra fat from the abdominal area or the thighs for injection into the bum. For most patients with an inverted shaped bum, around/bubble-shaped butt is the ideal surgical goal.
Square or H-Shaped Butt
A square or H-shaped bum is, like a V-shape, a bit flat. Also like the V-shape, those with a square bum tend to have a fuller abdominal area. However, unlike the V-shape, a square butt tends to be less angular and boxier. This can be frustrating for those with this shape, as it can be difficult to find clothing that properly fits both a larger belly and a flatter bum. Generally, those with a square-shaped rear opt to harvest fat from their abdominal area and flanks for this procedure. The most common result goal for a BBL candidate with a square bum tends to be the heart or A-shape.
Heart or A-Shaped Butt
A heart, or A-shaped bottom, is considered one of the more conventionally desirable types of butts out there. Individuals with a naturally occurring A-shaped behind also often have a traditional hourglass figure: slim waist and wide hips. Many BBL candidates have a heart-shaped bum as their goal when going into their procedure. However, plenty of folks with a naturally-given heart shaped butt still opt for a BBL, as it enhances what they were born with. This can result in an even lusher behind than before!
Round or O-Shaped Butt
The round, O-shaped behind is often fondly referred to as a “bubble butt.” This shape is known for its trademark curvy shape, which comes from a set of full hips and plenty of volume. Those with a bubble butt often opt for a BBL procedure, as it helps enhance their naturally round features.
Post-BBL Types
Now that we’ve gone over your pre-procedure butt shape, let’s look at what kinds of BBL shapes can be achieved by surgery. Be sure to ask your doctor for their input based on your individual body type and medical history.
Heart Shape or A-Shaped BBL
Those who are hoping for a traditional hourglass silhouette often opt for a heart-shaped result with their BBL. A heart, or A-shaped result will feature round, yet gentle curves in the hips along with plenty of volume in the bum. The buttock with an A-shape will be narrow at the waist and wider along the hips. If you have this shape naturally, the goal is usually to increase the size while making the buttocks perkier.
Round, Bubble, O-Shaped BBL
A round, or bubble-shaped behind is a more dramatic result than the heart-shape. Those who opt for a bubble butt as their BBL result generally enjoy a noticeably round and shapely end-result (think Kim K or J-Lo). This shape is more dramatic and has a significant increase in volume with a focus on the upper and middle parts of the buttocks.
Plus Size BBL Surgery
Plus size BBL surgery involves a patient with a higher body mass index or BMI that puts them in the plus-size category. Many doctors will accept patients with a higher BMI up to 45, but you should ask your doctor what their cut-off is for this procedure. The surgeon will use liposuction to remove excess fat from your abdomen, which will give you a smaller waistline. Many plus-size patients require less fat injected back to the buttocks to acquire their ideal shape just because the fat removal balances their waist to hip and buttocks ratio.
BBL Terms to Know
Once you’ve chosen your ideal among the types of BBL shapes, it’s time to book a consultation with your plastic surgeon of choice. Going into your consultation, it’s helpful for you to be informed and up-to-date about what a Brazilian Butt Lift involves, and what the terminology surrounding it actually means. This will make your consultation easier for you to navigate and will help you to make the right choice for your unique circumstances and anatomy. Your doctor, of course, is also there to provide expertise, guidance, and a professional recommendation on what the best shape and procedure will be for your body.
Here are a few of the most commonly used terms in the BBL sphere:
- BBL Volume
Volume has a number of meanings, but when in reference to a BBL or other forms of plastic surgery, it is referring to fullness in a body part. So, if you have a V-shaped bum, and undergo a BBL procedure, you’ll likely be adding volume to your behind.
- BBL Projection
A buttocks projection refers to how much one behind pokes out. This is generally in relation to their other bodily proportions, as outlined below.
- Buttock Size to Waist Ratio
A number of BBL candidates decide their ideal projection size by determining what butt to waist ratio will best suit them. This is all about proportions — after all, a medium-sized butt will look outlandishly enormous on somebody tiny! If you are unsure of how to find your unique proportional balance, your surgeon will be able to help during your consultation.
FAQs
- What should I expect at my Consultation?
During your consultation, Dr. Lapuerta will discuss your goals for the procedure. He will also determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure and provide information about pricing.
- Who is a good candidate for BBL?

- What is the recovery process for BBL?
You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure and stay with you for the next 24 hours. You will likely need to be off from work for at least one week, but it may be longer since you won’t be able to sit normally for at least two weeks. You will wear a compression garment for up to six weeks after the procedure. You must sleep on your side or stomach and cannot exercise for six weeks.
- How soon will I see my results?
You will begin to see the results once the swelling subsides and the compression garments are removed. However, full results may not be seen until one year after the surgery.
